Application and Selection Processes for OT and PT Applicants

As seats in the MSc(OT) and MSc(PT) Programs are limited, thus possession of published minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

  1. Applicants must achieve a four-year baccalaureate degree (120 units/credits or equivalent) with a minimum GPA of 3.0/4 (B or 75%) in the last 2 years or 60 units of university academic study. The degree can be in any university discipline; none are favoured. There are no course pre-requisites for the OT program; however, there are two course pre-requisites for the PT program. PT applicants must present one half or full course from the biological/life science category and one half or full course from the social science/humanities category with at least a course grade GPA of 3.0/4 in each.

  2. Applicants apply via Online Application Service through ORPAS.  Applicants must download and print the ORPAS Prerequisite Form found on the ORPAS application website, complete the chart, sign it and mail it to ORPAS by the application deadline date.  By January 6, 2012, applicants must submit the online application form, the completed ORPAS prerequisite form and non-refundable application fee ($180.00 ORPAS processing fee, plus an institutional levy of $90 for each university selection) directly to ORPAS. Please note that your application will be considered incomplete without the Prerequisite Form.  Incomplete files are not reviewed.

  3. English Language Requirements: If the applicant's native language is not English, a TOEFL score of 600 (written) or 250 (computer) or 92 (iBT) is required. The only exception to this requirement is those who have completed an entire university degree in either Canada or the U.S.A in English. By the application deadline date of January 6, 2012, the TOEFL score must be sent directly from the TOEFL Centre to McMaster University (McMaster code: 0936, Department codes: OT- 44 and PT- 48.)

  4. By January 31, 2012, transcripts from all universities the applicant has attended (and/or has attended and withdrawn, including exchange opportunities) must be submitted and received by ORPAS. The official transcripts must include all course work completed to date and in progress. ORPAS will calculate the applicant's GPA based on the last 60 units of university academic study.

  5. All eligible applicants to both the OT and PT programs are ranked solely on the basis of their GPA. Approximately the 300 top-ranked applicants to each of the programs are invited for a personal interview. It is impossible to accurately predict how competitive the applicant pools are from year to year, however, the cut-off GPA for an interview invitation for the last cycle was 3.48 for OT and 3.68 for PT. Interview dates for the 2011/2012 cycle are: Friday, April 27/12, Saturday, April 28/12 and Sunday, April 29/12.  Applicants invited to be interviewed are notified approximately three weeks in advance of their interview. All applicants are responsible for their own travel costs to and from the interview

  6. All applicants who are interviewed are ranked on a combination of their pre admission sub-GPA (25% of final ranking) and their interview scores (75% of final ranking) to determine the final ranking for offers of admission. Approximately 65 students are admitted to each of the OT and PT programs. The final approval of applicants for admission will be granted by the Associate Dean, School of Graduate Studies.

  7. Applicants will be notified of the admissions decisions via the email address that was provided to ORPAS in the online application. Applicants will receive either an offer of admission, notification of their position on the waiting list (including waitlist number) or a letter of refusal.
    1. Notification to all applicants will be sent on May 18, 2012.
    2. Responses to offers are required by June 1, 2012 for both firm and provisional acceptances.
    3. Provisional acceptances become "firm" on June 8, 2012
    4. Final transcripts must be received at ORPAS by June 29, 2012.

  8. Applicants being offered admission must complete the online offer of acceptance to McMaster University and pay a non-refundable deposit fee (acceptance fee) of $500.00 CAD paid online by credit card to hold the position by the offer deadline date. This fee will be deducted from the tuition following registration and entry into the program.
