Profile

Lorie Shimmell, MSc, is an occupational therapist and Assistant Professor in the School of Rehabilitation Science. She is the Professional Practice Coordinator (PPC) for the MScOT Program.  Lorie graduated with a bachelor degree in occupational therapy in 1986, and a master degree in rehabilitation science in 2007, both at McMaster University.

Current teaching responsibilities include professional practice coordination, and participation in all terms of the curriculum, with emphases in Terms 1 and 4.
Lorie's clinical background is in community based service in Ontario, Nova Scotia and Quebec, with particular interest in pediatric populations in school health and palliative services. She has also focused on direct and consultation service in mental health, including correctional systems.

Research Specialty

Research interests and involvement are centred around visual narratives as a vehicle in therapy with children, and youth transition. Lorie participates in investigations through CanChild Centre for Childhood Disability Research.

Fun Fact

Lorie's avocational time is spent with her husband and 3 children, extended family and friends. When she can sneak away, she'll be found in her workshop, building furniture for the pure joy of the process and the smell of sawdust.
