Program Overview

The Master of Science (OT) will prepare students in their eligibility to be registered practicing occupational therapists, and will meet professional accreditation and practice standards.

The minimum expectations will be for the completion of all course work across two extended study years:
* September to July (Year 1)
* September to September ( Year 2).

Year 1 introduces students to the fundamentals of contemporary Canadian occupational therapy practice.

Year 2 provides opportunities for developing more complex skills and preparing for entry to practice as a conscious, autonomous professional. Throughout the program, students will gain experience with many client populations and multiple settings.

The curriculum covers 6 terms of study over a 25 month period.

Year 1 (Terms I-III) consists of six 600-level full courses including practica experience.

Year 2 (Terms IV-VI) consists of nine 700-level courses, including an evidence based practice project, in addition to practica experiences.

Professional Practica / Fieldwork

Students participate in 5 clinical practica / fieldwork placements during the program the length of which varies from 3 to 8 weeks. Fieldwork placements are available in: hospitals, private practice, industry and community. During the fieldwork placements students are teamed with a practicing occupational therapist who guides their learning as they work together providing assessment and intervention to clients in the course of therapy.

Fieldwork will provide students with:

  • Experience and training in real practice environments
  • More hands on learning opportunities
  • The opportunity to learn practical skills in both clinical and research environments, locally, across Canada and internationally.
Evidence-Based Practice
The MSc (OT) utilizes a problem-based (PBL), self-directed learning philosophy.

Students will complete course work, fieldwork placement and an independent research project exploring the complexities and richness of evidence-based practice

These evidence-based practice projects will be evaluated through faculty assessment and presentation at a symposium, attended broadly by the clinical communities. All courses will be specific to this curriculum.
