SUSAN GUENTHER, PhD Student

Profile: As an occupational therapist, Susan practiced in Toronto in School Health Support Services, pediatric wheelchair prescription and seating, and as a Living and Life Skills Educator with youth with disabilities as they transitioned into adulthood. As a clinician Susan continued research on her Masters topic exploring the lived experiences of disabled students and how they navigated their own accommodations at university. In 2007, she relocated to McMaster University , working as a research project coordinator with Prof. Debra Stewart on transitions research and began her doctoral studies in the rehabilitation science program in 2008.
Research interests: Disability Studies and Rehabilitation Science discipline's views on disability and normalcy; attitudes and perspectives on disability and rehabilitation; disability partnerships in teaching and research.
Clinical interests: School Health Support, wheelchair prescription and seating, best practices in transition services for youth and adults with disabilities into adulthood.

OREN CHEIFETZ, PhD Student

Research interests: Main research involves working with people diagnosed with cancer at any stage of the disease. Research includes exercise and cancer, barriers to exercise for people with cancer, and related fields.
Clinical interests: Oren works on an acute care Hematology/Oncology ward. Oren is also the Chair of the Oncology Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.
Awards: Innovation Award for CanWell, a community-based exercise and education program for people with cancer presented by Cancer Care Ontario and the Canadian Cancer Society – Ontario .

Amanda Lorbergs, MSc, CK, PhD Student

Profile Amanda Lorbergs' research interest include: the muscle-bone unit, imaging bone geometry, and measuring musculoskeletal adaptation to mechanical loading (i.e., exercise). She plans to focus her PhD program on developing MRI as an imaging tool for measuring changes in bone shape at the spine.

BRIANO DI REZZE, PhD Student

Profile Briano is a 4th year PhD candidate at McMaster University in Rehabilitation Science. He is an occupational therapist primarily in the area of paediatrics, having worked with children across disability groups in both pre-school and school-aged populations.
Research Interests: : His research interests are in current and emerging research methodology within rehabilitation intervention research. The focus of his doctoral research is in developing a generic measure to evaluate intervention fidelity of paediatric occupational therapists and physiotherapists. This measure will be tested within a large randomized controlled trial conducted through CanChild and aims to be applicable for other paediatric interventions in the future. |

Tonya Castle Purvis, PhD Student

Profile Tonya is an accredited music therapist (MTA), specializing in mental health and addictions. After several years working at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Tonya spearheaded the Concurrent Disorders Specialist role for the Canadian Mental Health Association’s Crisis team (COAST) in Halton. She is now the Mental Health Coordinator with the Region of Halton and sits on the Mississauga/Halton LHIN Systems Integration Group for Mental Health and Addictions, and its No Wrong Door Task Group.
Research interests : Interprofessional mental health & addictions education in social services; vicarious trauma & compassion fatigue in social services; attitudes and perceptions of personality disorders

Lisa Rivard , PhD Student

Profile Lisa is a physiotherapist who has practiced in a variety of pediatric health care settings. She has held multiple research positions, gaining considerable expertise in the area of children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). Lisa has co-authored several publications and presented on the topic of DCD to audiences across North America and internationally. Her Master's work focused on understanding teachers' perceptions of children with DCD. Lisa began her doctoral studies in September 2010.

Profile Kathryn is a kinesiologist who has 15 years of experience working in the field of disability management. Kathryn has held positions on both the Ontario Kinesiology Associationand the Canadian Kinesiology Allianceboard of directors. She is currently co-editorial board chair for the Canadian Journal of Kinesiology. Kathryn began her doctoral studies in September 2010.

Profile Danielle is a physiotherapist and 4th year PhD candidate in Rehabilitation Science. Her clinical experience is in pediatric acute care, rehabilitation, and school health support settings. Danielle’s PhD work focuses on exploring the use of motor learning strategies within usual and virtual reality interactive video game-based physiotherapy interventions for children and youth with acquired brain injuries.

Andrea Hebert O.T. regON CHT,MSc Student

Profile Andrea graduated from the University of Toronto in 1991. She has worked in many area of O.T. and for the last 12 years has enjoyed working in hand therapy at the Hotel Dieu Shaver Health and Rehabilitation Centre in St. Catharines. She became a certified hand therapist in 2003. She is very interested in the varied responses people have to pain and the use of relaxation and mental imagery / hypnosis as a treatment technique to decrease pain.
Research interests : autonomic nervous system responses to pain, individual differences in imagery ability, relaxation plus motor imagery, graded motor imagery.

Profile Angie is a full time physiotherapist, working in out-patient orthopaedics. She returned to McMaster to pursue her MSc with the hopes of one day becoming a full-time professor at the post-secondary level. Angie’s love and passion for teaching has developed through her experiences as a PBT tutor and clinical instructor for McMasters PT program.
